After hours of pointing at the frigid vacuum of space, optical tubes and mirrors have reached thermal equilibrium with the ambient air. However, the act of transporting that cold glass into a warm, humid vehicle or garage invites a sudden and violent temperature shock. This rapid change can cause thermal stress on precision optics, potentially altering the figure of a primary mirror or loosening corrector lenses over time. The cool down protocol begins with patience. The optical tube assembly should be left uncapped for at least twenty minutes after the last observation, allowing air to circulate and the glass to rise in temperature slowly.
